The Cardcaptor Sakura anime is an adaptation of the Cardcaptor Sakura manga by CLAMP.  The anime version came out in 1998 and ran for 70 episodes and 2 movies.

The story...

Sakura Kinomoto, an average 4th grader, discovers a book in her fathers library and opens it, unwittingly releasing the magical "Clow Cards" from the book.  The "guardian of the seal" Keroberos awakens and, upon discovering the cards gone, informs Sakura that she's going to have to get them back.

The "Clow Cards" are magical cards, each of which represents a specific magical power and has a unique personality.  Released and on their own, they often appear causing some form of mischief.  Each time Sakura finds and seals one, it comes under her control and she can use it as she attempts to capture the rest of the cards.  Along the way she makes friends, competes against rivals trying to collect the cards for themselves, and discovers the history of the Clow Cards.
